I bought a purportedly catnip-laden cat toy for Ink from Ikea today, but he paid more attention to the giant plastic shopping bag instead. So much for my attempt at an Xmas gift.

Ikea's Tampines outlet was really quite civilised, despite it being Xmas Eve. I'd never been there before and the hugeness of it is very refreshing. Not to mention the inevitable Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe when one enters the self-service warehouse area.

In the middle of this evening's Ikea research trip, I pointed at a lamp and asked. "Okay, so tell me: is that outrageously ugly or cutting-edge ahead-of-the-curve design?"
"Outrageously ugly --- "
"Thank you. I thought I was the only one who thought so."
" --- Actually, it looks like the opening show at the Biennale last year. Especially the bigger one." And my friend pointed at this version of the lamp in question:

Obviously, my friend shall not be named, or he'll never work in this town again.

The first surprise was that on a Saturday afternoon, the Ikea Alexandra store was not sardine-packed with browsing Singaporeans. It felt like we were shopping on a weekday afternoon --- no children too short to see over the edge of shopping carts pushing them into me, no long queues at the checkout line, barely any wait for a table at the cafe for lunch.
The second surprise was that while there was no official sale on, there were all sorts of discontinued items with the prices slashed to clear them out. Which is how cour marly ended up with a spiffy retro-print queen-sized quilt cover and pillow sheets for just a cool $29.
The third surprise (or maybe this wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone au fait with Ikea's patterns of stocking inventory) was that the same Pult ceiling light purchased almost eight years ago was still available. So the bathroom lights will still match each other.
PS: Ikea Hacker makes me realise what inept technical skills I have.

Thirtysomething, Singapore-born and -bred (barring five years spent in wintrier climes), and thus far resisting all forms of government propaganda exalting procreation. I watch too much American TV, eat too much local food (to which the concepts of low-fat/low-cal/low-anything except low price do not apply) and read too many blogs, most of them American or local. I'd love it if Singapore were visited by the monsoon more often and if I could wear jeans to work.
